When you’re playing in a sport, whether professionally or as a hobby, you put your mouth at a certain risk for injury. Especially if you’re playing a full-contact sport, the danger of oral impact increases. At Dental by Design, we’re here to help you with any and all injuries that occur as a result of playing sports, and we want to educate you regarding how to prevent injuries as well.
Sports dentistry is the treatment and prevention of oral injuries and disease sustained as a result of participation in a sport. Here, we’ll provide information on equipment designed to keep your mouth safe, as well as treat injuries sustained in a dental emergency such as a cracked or broken tooth, a dislodged tooth, or a simple chip.
In addition to treating injuries, you can also come to our office to inquire about mouth guards and preventative measures as an athlete.
Unfortunately, injuries to the mouth, teeth, and jaw are common among athletics. Some of the most common issues that we treat at our office include broken teeth, chips, and teeth which have been knocked out. When you have chipped or cracked your teeth, it will be important to seek immediate care.
If you’ve fractured the tooth and a piece has come off, try to find it and store it in a glass of milk until you reach the dentist. Based on the severity of the injury, the dentist will lay out a treatment plan for you. If you displace a tooth or knock one out, you’ll need to get here as soon as possible to ensure that the tooth can be saved.
Most importantly, do not try to re-implant the tooth yourself, wrap it, or touch the root. Try to get to our office within 30 minutes.
Keeping an injury from happening is the best thing you can do for your teeth. One of the best ways to do this is to wear a mouth guard when playing. There are several types to choose from, and we’d be happy to walk you through your selection to ensure you get the right one for your situation. Contact Dental by Design to schedule a visit today.
